Leading can be hard. It can be harder if your organization, or team, is not unified under a common, long-term Objective (mission statement). Whether your leading clients or employees, let people know what you’re all about and impress them with a well defined Objective.

An Objective isn’t the same as a goal, or a Key Result, which have metrics attached to them. It also isn’t exactly vague. Objectives still have elements of specification to them. They’re qualitative. A leader or employee should be able to read it and think, “how can I get closer to this?”.

“Be awesome”, “Do good things”, “Dominate the market”, “Go big”, “Have 100% quality”. All of these Objectives (mission statements) have great sentiment. However, they lack the quality information needed to provide an actionable and unified direction within an organization. These Objectives need refinement.

Rather than being vague and working hard, let’s be specific and work smart. Rather than creating a statement with an easy, or impossible, metric to hit next to it, let’s take a step back and focus on the grand scheme of the work. Refining an Objective by adding more or less meat to it can provide a basic, common understanding of the ultimate direction you’re working in.
